Water Source Heat Pumps Unit

Water source heat pump are similar the traditional heat pumps. The only difference is that heat is transferred from water and not by air. Rivers, lakes or ponds get heat from the heat pumps water source heat pumps extract this heat from the water and transfer it inside the house.

This HVAC system is surely not available for everyone. To avail the facilities of this heat pump your home must be located near the water source like rivers, ponds, well or any other water source. Temperature inside the water is more constant than air so it is relatively easy to transfer heat. They transfer heat energy more efficiently than any other water source.

In this system series of pipes are submerged inside the ground.

Types

Water source heat pump can be closed loop or open loop

Closed loop

In closed loop system anti freeze solution is pumped through pipe buried inside the ground. Pipes in closed loop can be installed horizontally in trenches or vertically in bore holes. In closed loop system this mixture flows through pipes in the water source like lake and transfers the heat from water.

This heated mixture than piped to the heat pump and then heat is exchanged with the refrigerant. Closed loop system if not installed properly can freeze the ground and heat will not be transferred properly. Closed loop systems are less efficient than open loop system.

Working of closed loop system

• I closed loop system coils or pipes are submerged inside the water either horizontally or vertically.

• Pipes are submerged in the form of loop. Length of the loops depends upon the size of the heat pump and the temperature of the water.

• In closed loop system mixture of water and anti-freeze solution runs through the pipes to extract the heat from the water. Heat extracted from the water is exchanged with the refrigerant.

• The refrigerant is compressed and it converts into gaseous form. Heat exchanger extracts the heat form the fluid and circulates it though out the entire house.

Open loop

In open loop system water is extracted from the source and piped into the heat pump. Refrigerant extracts the heat from the water and the water is then returned back to its source. This process is more efficient than closed loop system.

As the water is in direct contact there are no chances of heat loss. In this system wells, bore wells etc are used as the source of water.

Working of open loop system

• In open loop system water is extracted from the source and then transferred to the heat pump and the heat exchanger.

• The water is extracted with the help of boreholes. Heat exchange fluid i.e. refrigerant is present inside the system.

• Refrigerant extracts the heat from the water and then water is returned back to the source.

• The water is as cool as 50C when it is returned back to the ground. The water starts regaining heat from the ground again.

3. The maintenance cost of water source heat pump is generally low.

4. Water source heat pumps are cheaper to install than ground source heat pumps.

5. Water source heat pumps are highly energy efficient as they transfer heat from water.

6. Heat transfer rate is higher than other form of heat pumps.
